Many wanna-be marketers have this query – What specialization I should go for?
And our simplest answer would be to decide based on
1. Job-Seeker – Go for your strengths. Example – Opt for Social Media if you are Creative. SEO if you are an analytical, critical thinker
2. Entrepreneur – What can give you the Best Growth for your company
But, I would also suggest looking beyond specialization for your overall growth as a Marketer.
And to help you, let me introduce you to the 3 types of Marketers
3. T-Shaped Marketer
Let me explain each of these to you
They are like “Jack of No Trades, Master Of One”.
Their knowledge in one particular skill-set will be too Deep. But when it comes to others, it would be very less.
For eg – You may be a Rockstar in Social Media Marketing and best in the Game. But when it comes to SEO, Lead Generation, Paid Ads, you may be No One.
They are like “Jack of All Trades, Master Of None”.
They have a good knowledge of various skill-sets, but they do not have deep knowledge of any particular skill-set.
For eg – You may have very sound knowledge of various Digital Marketing channels like SEO, SMO, Paid Ads, Content Marketing, Lead Generation, etc etc. But, you do not have in-depth knowledge in any of these.
3. T-Shaped Marketer
I believe you might have come across this name for the first time.
They are like “Jack of All Trades, Master Of One”.
They have a good knowledge of various skill-sets and also have deep knowledge in One particular skill-set.
For eg – You may have very sound knowledge of various Digital Marketing channels like SEO, SMO, Paid Ads, Content Marketing, Lead Generation, etc etc. Also, you have in-depth knowledge of Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
The horizontal line stands for Jack of All Trades – which shows your knowledge across various skill-sets.
And the Vertical line stands for Master in One – the skill-set in which you are a Rockstar and the Best one out there.
Now, you may be wondering what kind of marketer you need to be?
Let me answer that for you.
It would depend upon your Profession, Role, years of experience.
If you are an Entrepreneur or Marketing Manager, you definitely need to be a Generalist to assist your team in the right direction. But, if you are in-charge of marketing, then you should push yourself to become T-shaped and try to Master in the marketing channel which can generate the best returns for your company.
If you are a Fresher, then you need to focus more on Specialist so that you can get hired for that one role. At the same time, you need to have some knowledge of other marketing tools so that you can use them when required. Most of you guys might land up working for smaller companies where-in they cannot afford to have multiple teams. They might have only SEO or SEO + SMO. But, if you can demonstrate that you have knowledge beyond your specialization – say SEO, you can get a better role, faster promotion, and hike as well.
So, I repeat. Start off with Specialization, but eye to become T-Shaped Marketer over the next few years.
If you are a traditional Sales or Marketing person switching to Digital Marketing, my advice would be from Generalist to T-Shaped if you have a Digital Marketing Team. If you do not have a Team, then Specialist to T-Shaped.
If you are a Freelancer or Homepreneur, focus on Specialist only.
